Fight Back Against the Flu!

The weather outside is cold and damp.  We are nearing the end of winter, but that doesn’t mean we are nearing the end of flu season.  In a lot of places, the flu season is just gearing up.  How can you protect yourself from the Flu?  What is different about the flu this season?  And what should you do when you get the flu?

There are several things you can do to protect yourself from the flu.  First and foremost, is to GET A FLU SHOT.   This season, the CDC only recommends getting injectable flu vaccines.  They are not recommending the nasal spray as it has concerns about its effectiveness.    They are also not recommending live attenuated influenza vaccines for the same reason.  There are several options this year, ranging from a shot that protects against three viruses, one that protects against four viruses and a high dose shot for older people.  Getting a flu shot not only protects you, but it protects the people around you as well.  If you don’t get the flu, you can’t spread the flu.  It is also important to continue to practice good hygiene by washing your hands and also staying home if you are sick.  That way you don’t spread the flu on to others.

The vaccine is not always totally effective and even if you are vaccinated, you still might get the flu.  If you have gotten the vaccine, it is likely that your flu will be less severe and last a shorter period of time then if you don’t get the vaccine.  If you do come down with the flu, quick treatment is important.  Anti-viral medications can help lessen your symptoms and shorten the duration of the flu.  This year there is a generic anti-viral medication which can help with the cost of the medication.  It is especially important for high risk individuals to seek treatment right away, for example, children under 5 and elderly people, in addition to anyone who might have lung or asthma problems.  Anti-viral medications can also lower the risk of complications from the flu.

Every year we fight a flu season, make this the year that you take control and don’t let it control you.  Get ready by getting vaccinated, and know what to do if you do contract the flu.
