Thinner Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is a time for families to enjoy each other and give thanks for each other and all the good things in their lives.  It is a time when people get together and set aside their differences.  It started with the Pilgrims and the Indians, sharing a feast together and has since evolved into families enjoying good each other and good food.  Over the years, the emphasis has definitely been on the food part of thanksgiving.  For many Americans, the holidays can mean extra weight is gained as they enjoy holiday gatherings and parties, and for many these pounds stay on long after the Holidays are over.   The Holiday season generally begins with Thanksgiving.  Here are a few tips to keep from packing on those extra pounds.

The first tip is to exercise to counteract the extra calories! Try to fit in a little cardio workout Thanksgiving morning.  Even if you don’t have a lot of time, a quick run on the treadmill, a walk around the neighborhood, or some families play a little game of tag or football outside.   Any activity that gets you moving is a step in the right direction!

It is also important to eat breakfast and/or lunch.  Some people think by not eating a meal they are saving the calories, but this can actually backfire, causing you to be so hungry that you over indulge more than you would have had you just eaten a small meal before.  A meal of protein and carbohydrates can help you control your hunger later.

Thanksgiving foods are traditionally high in calories and fat.   Families will oftentimes treat the meal as a potluck of sorts, with everyone bringing a dish to share.  When cooking your dish, try to use alternatives to fat and sugars.  Recipes often call for more oil and butter then is needed, and by reducing the amount used, you can cut calories and fat and your guests won’t even notice the difference!  In recipes calling for full fat sour cream, try using reduced fat or fat free sour cream or Greek yogurt.   When cooking desserts you can use fruit purees or sugar substitutes instead of sugar.

Even if you just use one of these tips, it could make a difference!  Enjoy the Holiday season with family and friends.
