Traveling with Medications

Summer is in full swing, and if you haven’t gone on vacation yet, you are probably packing up to go now.  Whether you are going to the beach or jetting overseas or boarding a cruise ship, it is important to make sure you have all your medical needs taken care of.  Not only should you have all of your daily medications in good supply, but also anything you might need in an emergency situation.

To prepare for your trip you need to make sure you have enough of your daily medications to last the entire trip, with a few days extra just in case something happens to delay your trip home.  Having an extra copy of your prescriptions is also helpful.  Pack all medications and prescriptions in your carry-on bag so that you will have them with you when you need them in case your luggage gets lost or delayed.

It is a good idea to pack first aid type items that you might need, depending on your destination.  Band-Aids, pain relievers, thermometers, and antibiotic creams are good things to have on hand.  If you are going camping, it is a good idea to pack bug spray and of course sunscreen if you are going to the beach.  If you are traveling on a cruise, pack some motion sickness medication.   If you have these basic items with you then you won’t have to stop enjoying yourself on your trip to find a place to purchase these items.

If you are traveling outside of the United States, you should check the policies of the country you are traveling to, to be sure that your medication is allowed in the country you are planning to visit.  You can check with the American Embassy or Consulate in the country that you are planning to visit to be sure your medications are permitted.  If you are traveling by plane, you should check with the TSA to be sure you are allowed to carry on your medications.

If you are going on a cruise, make sure you not only have all your medications, but also any emergency medications you might have such as an epi pen if you have allergies, or a nebulizer if you have asthma.  While most ships have a doctor on board it it is best that you come prepared.

With proper planning and packing, you can have a wonderful and healthy vacation, it just takes a little planning ahead!
